The Open Data Kit (ODK) is a free and open-source set of tools which help organizations author, field, and manage mobile data collection solutions. It is a very useful tool to mapping the local ecosystem and industrial symbiosis in a general way, without to have to develop or reuse other much more complex software. With ODK you could:
– Build a geolocalized data collection form for very general purpose (XSLT language could be used to create the form) inclusing geocoded pictures;
– Collect the data on a mobile device and send it to a server;
– Aggregate the collected data in realtime on a server and extract it in useful open formats for later processing.
ODK is a tool being used to create decision support for several fields of applicatioon and for building multimedia-rich nature mapping tools.
